Variations: Graf, Graff, Groh, Groff, Grove The following information is scanned and copied from The Groff Book Part 1 and American Groff Families Part 2. In these books, the line of Martin Groff was referred to as the “L” line so it is here, also. L Martin GROFF* b. abt. 1690. He m. Catherine BEAR* who was b. abt. 1695 and d. aft. 3 Jul. 1754. Martin may be the son of Marx GRAF who was baptised 2 Nov 1640 at Bäretswil, Canton Zurich, Switzerland. In 1649, Marx was living in Wirzwil with his five siblings and his Anabaptist parents, Jacob GRAF and Anna SPÖRRI. In 1651, the family moved near Sinsheim, which is now in Germany. On 26 Apr 1716, Marx’s widow lived in Steinsfurt, Germany. On 22 Jun 1721, 151 acres in Earl Township were surveyed1 to Martin Groff as part of the 5000 acres in the right of Martin Kendig and John Herr. This tract was east of the 200 acres surveyed to Jacob Bear, son of"Old" Henry Bear, who was also probably the father of Martin's wife Catharine. The 151 acres were patented 2 Mar 1735 and inherited by Jacob Groff (L7) through his father's will dated 3 Jul 1754, and proved 1760. Jacob was to pay his brothers and sisters a total of £ 325. The release2, dated 9 Apr 1761, names all of the children of Martin Groff (L). This land is located at the northwest corner of what is now Amishtown Road and North Shirk Road, near New Holland. A tract of 196 acres was warranted on 1 Mar 1735 to Martin Groff (L) and patented on 3 Mar 1762, by Joseph Groff (L2).3 This tract is located east of North Shirk Road and is bounded by North Hoover Avenue on the east. Route 23 crosses the tract near its southern boundary. Abraham Groff (L21) petitioned the Lancaster Orphans Court on 3 May 1784, for the right to purchase 170 acres of the tract, and the value was set at £ 1020. Martin Groff (L) was named "my affectionate brother" in the will of Hans Groff. In 1755 he was a trustee with Christian Wenger of The Groffdale Mennonite Church. He served with Henry Landis, who married Fronica Groff, as guardian of the minor children of Jacob Groff (C) and of Jacob Groff (E1). It is believed that some of the orphaned married the children of Martin Groff (L). After 1751, Martin served as the guardian of his three grandsons, children of Barbara (L1) and Peter Eby. During the last year of his life he assigned a mortgage4 of £ 75 to his son-in-law Abraham Groff, tailor of Earl Township, for "use of orphans of Peter Eby." Martin Groff (L) shines through the dry pages of court house records as a compassionate and caring man, everyone's favorite relative, and the matchmaker of a large family. NOTES: 1. The children of Martin and Catherine include: Barbara (L1), Joseph (L2), Christian (L3), Anna (L4), Elizabeth (L5), Mary (L6), Jacob (L7), Frena/Feronica (L8) and Mark (L9) L1 Barbara GROFF* b. abt. 1719 and d. aft. 1761. In 1740, Barbara m. widower Peter EBY*, who was b. abt. 1690 (See EBY A).' His first wife, Anna MEYLIN, daughter of Martin Meylin, had died about 1739, leaving seven children under the age of fifteen. By the time Peter Eby died abt. 1750 in Earl Twp., there were 4 additional children. Abraham Bare and Michael Sharer2 were appointed guardians of seven of the minor children, and Martin Groff (L) was appointed in 1751 as guardian over his grandsons, Dorst, Martin, and John Eby. By 13 Dec1750, Barbara (L1) had married Dewald LICHTY (also Leighty, Lighty), whose name appeared on the tax list of Lebanon Township in 1755. Dewalt Lightly died in Lebanon Township in Jan 1791,3 leaving a grandson, John Shallenberger, the son of his deceased daughter, Barbara, and her husband John Shallenberger. NOTES: 1 . C. L. Barbara also had a child with Dewald Leighty: Barbara (L15). L15 Barbara LIGHTY d. bef. 1791. She m. John SHALLENBERGER. They had a son, John (L151). L151 John SHALLENBERGER was living in 1791. L2 Joseph GROFF1 was b. abt. 1722 and inv. 7 Nov. 1776. He m. at meeting Catherina GROFF (EF3, was EE83), who was b. abt. 1726. Joseph was a yeoman and he was the first named son on the release by the heirs of Martin Groff (L) to his brother Jacob (L7), who was named in his father’s will dated 3 Jul. 1754, to inherit the homestead in Earl Twp. Joseph had probably been living on the neighboring tract since his marriage in 1747 “at meeting.”2 His wife was the daughter of John KREY/GROH, who married Joseph’s first cousin, Mary GROFF, as his second wife. The administrative account of Joseph Groff was filed on 3 Dec. 1783 at Lancaster. His oldest son, Abraham (L21), was granted the plantation by the Orphans Court on 3 May 1784 and all the children were listed at this time. NOTES: 1. Will I-1-162 (dat. 3 Jul. 1754, pr. 1760), Lancaster; Deed WW-57, Lancaster, lists all his ch. 2. W.H. Egle, p. 338 According to Groff Families Part 1, Joseph and Catherine had the following children: Abraham b. abt. 1750 (L21), Jacob b. abt. 1758 (L22), Elizabeth b. betw. 1763 and 1768 (L23), Anna b. abt. 1765 (L24) and Maria b. abt. 1767 (L25). However, according to American Groff Families Part 2, the children were: Abraham (L21) b. abt. 1745, Maria (L22), who was E142, and m. Jacob ERB of Warwick Twp, Barbara (L23), who was E143 and m. Michael GREYBILL of Earl Twp, Veronica (L24) who was E144 and in 1785 was spinster in Earl Twp, and Elizabeth (L25) who was E145 was a spinster in 1785 in Earl Twp. L21 Abraham GROFF b. abt. 1745. On 8 Feb. 1785, he and his sisters sold their father’s 175 acres to Martin Huber. L3 Christian GROFF There is no known proof of which Christian Groff is the "real" ' son of Martin Groff (L). Family historians in Virginia have assumed that he was the older brother of the Marks Grove (L7) who settled in the Shenandoah Valley. Circumstantial evidence shows that the Christian Grove who appears in Virginia around 1755 and was buried on the Hawksbill (Creek), Va. in 1786 at age 54, was the son of Hans GROFF. A Christian Graff is recorded by the Orphans Court at York, Pa., as dying in Newberry Township in 1775. His widow was pregnant, and son Jacob is mentioned. Another Christian Graff in 1776 had children and a wife, Elizabeth. A John Christian Grove will was proved in Fairfield County, Ohio, in 1818, and his tombstone in the Hite cemetery shows he died at age sixty-seven years. Family traditions2 says he was the uncle of John Grove (L94) and the families were very closely associated. He was probably the son of Christian Groff (L3), who we also think was the one who died in Newberry Township, York County, in 1775. The following outline is based on these assumptions and awaits proof. Jacob (L31) and Christian (L32) Groff may have gone to Virginia and been soldiers in the Revolution there. The author of American Groff Families Part 2 states in his book that he believes that the Christian Grove (who was F5 in the first Groff book) whose will was proved 27 Jul. 1786 in Woodstock, Va was the son of Martin and that the Christian Groff listed in the 1770 tax list of Lampeter Twp, Lanc. Co, Pa as “freeman (single) and poor man” was F5. In 1756, Christian Grove (L3) purchased 225 acres from John Lionberger on the Big Hawksbill Creek near Luray, Va. The tract was divided between his sons Christian (L37) and Samuel (L39). When the heirs of Martin Groff (L) released property to Jacob Groff, Christian Graffe (L3) signed an X as his mark on 2 Mar. 1761, which was affirmed by witnesses John Thome and David Stout on 15 Jun. 1763. Christian Grove’s will was dated 9 Jun. 1786, to which he signed an X as his mark. In 1765, Chrisitan Grove bought 116 acres on the north branch of the Shenandoah River from Joseph Rodes, his brother-in-law, whose father John Rodes, a Mennonite preacher, was killed there by Indians in 1764. This farm was inherited by son John Grove (L34). NOTES: 1. E. L. Denniston, Genealogy of the Stukey, Ream, Grove, Clem and Denniston Families, (Harrisburg, Pa:, 1939) p. 394 2. Esther Grove to J. L4 Anna GROFF b. abt. 1726. She m. bef 1761 Christian NEWCOMER and lived in Bethel Twp in 1775. L5 Elizabeth GROFF b. abt. 1728 and she m. bef. 1761 Andrew LIVINGSTON. L6 Mary GROFF b. abt. 1730. She m Peter BECKER. In the Groff Book 1 the Peter Becker whose will was proved on 3 Feb. 1785, was identified as Mary’s husband and his children as her children. However, the research of Charles R. Clemson1 proves that this Peter Becker was m to Susanna Holtzbaum on 18 Nov. 1735 by Rev. John Casper Stoever. The Peter Becker who d 13 Oct. 1802 in Cocalico Twp had a wife Mary, who d 30 Jun 1790. They are buried in the Peter Becker family cemetery on the west side of Indian Run, now in Clay Twp.2 Peter Becker’s will was dated 10 Jan. 1792, and proved 30 Oct. 1802. His son Martin was to receive the real and personal property and be responsible for the keeping of his three blind brothers. They are interred in the family cemetery. I am not listing the children that were named in the books because the author(s) seem to have sketchy details, etc. NOTES: 1. Charles R. Clemson, 554 State St., Lancaster, Pa. 17603, to Jane E. L7 Jacob GROFF b. abt. 1732. Jacob Groff (L7) inherited his father's home plantation, probably as the youngest son who was of age at the time Martin's will was written in 1754. He had several children: Fronica (L71), Martin (L72), Henry (L73), Peter (L74), Margaret (L75), Jacob (L76). L71 Fronica GROFF b. abt. 1753 and m Casper SHERICK. In 1774 Casper bought the "Old Henry Bear" property neighboring on the west the original Martin Groff (L) homestead. These two properties were part of the 5000 acres originally warranted in 1717 to Martin Kendig and John Herr. The 351 acres were divided between Martin Groff (L) and Jacob Bear, son of "Old Henry" Bear.1 NOTES: 1. Deed S-432 Lancaster, and Survey D-82-47 Harrisburg. L72 Martin GROFF1 b. Jun. 1759 and d. In Groff Book I he was included as E14, but if he had been a grandson of Hans Groff (E), he would not have needed to be naturalized. He has been included in American Groff Families Part 2 as ?C7, and may have been the Abraham Grove of Letterkenny Township whose will was proved 15 May 1790, in Franklin County. Feronica and Abraham had 7 children. NOTES: 1. According to American Groff Families Part 2 2. According to Groff Families Part 1 L9 Mark GROFF b. abt. 1736 and d. 29 Sept. 1808 in Lower Massnutten, Va. Mark was the youngest son of this large family, and received "my ould Bibelle" in his father's will. Although the inventory of Martin Groff was dated 9 Aug. 1759, the will was not probated until 1760. They may have waited until Mark reached age twenty-one to avoid the complications of minor heirs. Mark was married to Susan RHODES1 bef. 25 Sept. 1765, when a deed from the heirs of her father gave him tracts of 120 and 68 acres on the south side of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River in Frederick, now Page County, Virginia. Susan was b. abt. 1740 and d. abt. 1770. Susan's parents, Hans ROTH and Catharine ALBRIGHT, had been killed by Indians on 31 Aug. 1764, along with some of their younger children. Hans Roth was a Mennonite minister, and Mark Grove was a Mennonite in his earlier years. It is believed that he was a member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church near Luray, where Reverend Koontz became pastor about 1775. Mark's funeral sermon was preached in English by Reverend Koontz and in German by Reverend Jacob Harshberger, another Baptist minister. The name of Marks Grove is on the list of Captain Michael Reader's Company of Militia in the Revolutionary War Records of Shenandoah County, Virginia, which was created from Frederick, now Page, County in 1772. He was a farmer and lived with his large family just east of Massanutten Mountain on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in what is now Page County, Virginia. Susan Rhodes Groff was probably the mother of the first five children of Mark Groff (L9): David (L91), Barbara (L92), Martin (L93), John (L94) and Christian (L95). The second wife was Maria GRAFF,2 a cousin from Pennsylvania. She was probably the daughter of Jacob Groff (El). She must have been bom just before or after her father's death about 1740, if she were the mother of Mark's sixth through eleventh children, who were bom between 1772 and 1786: Mary (L96), Nancy (L97), Susannah (L98), Anna (L99), Samuel (L90), Elizabeth (L9a). The third wife of Mark Grove (L9) was Susanna ???, the mother of at least the three youngest children. She dated her will 10 May 1813, in Shenandoah County, Virginia, naming Daniel (L9b), Joseph (L9c), and Frainey (L9d) as "my youngest children" and heirs. This could mean she was married before and had previous children, or that some of the children attributed to the second wife were actually the children of the third wife, but not included as her heirs.3 Mark Grove died intestate 19 Sept. 1808, and is buried on the old Rhodes farm. The settlement of his estate and the public auction of his possessions on November 4, 1808, are on record at the Shenandoah County Court House. Henry Brumbach, administrator of the estate and husband of Mary Grove (L96), bought the home property of 388 acres from the heirs. Henry first settled near the Joseph Roads and Daniel Kiblinger farms. Leaving this property to his son John (L961), he moved to a farm on the Shenandoah River about three miles northwest of Luray. The family cemetery is on this property, in 1983 owned by Mrs. Janie Bailey Mauck Spitler. NOTES: 1. E.L. Denniston, p. 411-426 2. John William Coe to Jane E. Best, Aug. 30 1983. 3. Wills 1-102 (pr.
